Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration
January 12 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Jan. 12, 2018, marks the 45th year Seattle Colleges has presented the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration. As in the previous 33 years, it will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church, a gathering place for the community and a site visited by Dr. King the one time he was in Seattle.
We are excited to present noted writer and speaker, Ijeoma Oluo, just days before the release of her book, “So You Want to Talk About Race.” Her keynote address is timely and will provide thoughtful inspiration for moving our community forward.
According to Oluo, “When we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of nonviolent activism, what does violence and nonviolence look like in 2018? Where does racial violence truly lie today – online, in schools, in our government, in our streets? And in a time when the very nature of violence is up for debate, can the methods and values of Dr. King still help us forge a path forward toward racial justice? Let’s discuss how an honest look at the work of Dr. King may give us a more clear picture of the work we need to do today.”
